Whereas a large number of assessments indicate desire to engage students in active learning, group learning, and modern pedagogy, the committee recommends that:
i. Professional development opportunities should be offered and should be instructional in nature. Professional presenters, including local expertise, should receive remuneration for presenting workshops to faculty, both full-time and part-time, at in-service sessions, with ideas for relevant implementation in various disciplines.
Whereas the TSJC mission statement states: "We are committed to offering traditional and alternative approaches to education, providing quality instruction, and promoting lifelong learning," and whereas numerous assessments indicate problems with technology resources, the AISLC recommends
ii. Planning activities should treat all technology resources (from chalkboards to distributed computer technologies) as servants of education, i.e., technology should enhance and extend instruction and lifelong learning. Specifically, faculty must be involved in planning, deployment, and implementation of new technologies.
iii. Provide regular training on available, as well as new, technologies to all staff.
iv. Encourage all staff to learn (as interest and ability allow) and be granted full development access to TSJC website, because (a) a large website can only be timely with continual maintenance by a team of trained content experts, namely faculty and staff; (b) all positive content is beneficial to the mission of the college; (c) students need access to a wide variety of electronic materials, the website is just such a medium
v. Assign a taskforce consisting of technical support and end-users to identify and solve the many problems associated with PicTel (and possibly other technologies), including technical issues as well as pedagogical best-practice issues.
