3.      What other items would you like to see as “standard” in all classrooms?

VHS

I’d like computers upgraded to load my N drive, DVDs, websites and WebCT Vista courses faster.

An Internet-connected computer with projection capability is really basic, especially for physics and math courses.

computers & projectors

I would like to see smart boards in all classrooms

All technology grouped on a cart instead of separate components.  The dvd player should be part of the computer, not a separate piece of equipment that has to be attached to a tv set.

projection system

instructor computer, instructor table, headsets for all computers, additional table space for students to have books and paper out while working on the computers

Chalk…sometimes it’s the little things

telephones – not only for classroom needs, but for safety and security

DVD players should be standard in order to show media in classes

More blackboards please.  Math needs more blackboards. Or, whiteboards if that is all we can get.  Just more!

I frequently use VHS tapes, but I do not use the “smart tvs” because I need to start and stop according to the flow of class discussion.  I would like to have a tv monitor with both VHS and DVD manual operation capabilities in all rooms.  We have many valuable VHS tapes. Duplicating them in DVD format would be an unnecessary expense when they don’t yet require updating.

The ability to use DVDs and access the internet while teaching would be great.

good lighting, multiple pull down white boards or chalk boards, internet access

Many university classrooms have immediate response “clicker” systems, but I’m not sure I care for them myself.

The ability to show DVDs, use the computer and pull up computer websites, show powerpoints, and have whiteboards to write on are the things that should be standard in all classrooms.

The ability to take control of the student computers while teaching a computer class.  This technology would also allow the instructor to put a student screen on the smart board for discussing problems or solutions for various projects.

The ability to record the smart board for placement in our Blackboard or WebCt areas.  This would involve placing a microphone in the room and to have a computer with enough power to store the project.

Instructor lectern, computer, projection system, sound system

I don’t know if having a Power Point projection system is all rooms is practical, but we should have facilities readily available in all classroom buildings.

4.      What additional items would you like to have in certain classrooms?  Please identify the classroom and describe the technology upgrades you desire.

Room

Additional Items Desired

Berg 309

smart board

Alamosa 124

Make it more instructor friendly with access to all equipment and controls in one place and a faster computer.

Alamosa 229

document camera, computer monitor, etc as in all other classrooms for polycom/WebCT and move all the equipment to another room – that one is too small, too long and too narrow for Polycom.

Alamosa 129

Can all Polycom equipment be moved to this room instead of 229?  Or move everything back to 219 and add a document camera and monitor

Berg 305

color printer that works

M401

projector, computer, projection screen

Alamosa Computer labs

I would like to have control of the students’ computers while I lecture and then be able to demonstrate what to do on their individual computers.

Banta 306

projector, computer, screen or smart board

Mullen 302

smart board and DVD player

Trinidad cosmetology clinic areas

sound system

Alamosa 102

new computer, current computer is very slow

Alamosa 238

get rid of the tv set, upgrade the computer to include DVD capability, move the computer closer to the smartboard/lectern/desk

Alamosa 218 & 130

smartboard, computer with dvd player, projector, projection screen

Alamosa 129

computer with DVD capability

LCD projector to hook up my personal computer to do demos with software that I have a license for, but the school does not.

Berg 105

permanent white board or smartboard

_______308

more chairs

Router lab room

Internet connection not connected to TSJC or CCCS network for CNG related downloads; updated routers and switches; wireless routers; fluke meters; multimeters

________238

Ability to turn off some or all lighting as needed for appropriate view of smart board

Berg 304

I have asked for the ability to show Power Point slides in this classroom and so far have not gotten it.  I have tried the videos, which were installed in that room many times, but was frustrated.  Many times the system was ‘locked’.  My slides did not show up clearly and the portable keyboard was miserable to work with.

Davis 218

This is a chemistry lab and computer stations with appropriate software would be great.

Davis 222

Really needs a projector, computer that can play DVDs and projector screen.

Berg 301

In addition to the technology tools listed above, we need a large format scanner in the art room. Like every field, art is increasingly becoming digital.  Many of my students are also graphic design and multi-media students. They need to be able to convert their artwork into forms that can be used in digital formats. It is also important that they work on building a digital portfolio of their work.

5.      Are other changes needed in the classrooms to effectively utilize new technologies (changing layout of the classroom, modifying lighting, etc)? Please describe the changes needed in each classroom that you use.

Room

Modifications Requested

Berg 309, Berg 304

need control of room lighting (lighting zones)

Berg 105

Change lighting to allow light on instructor even if big screens are not illuminated

Berg 309

more electrical outlets needed

Alamosa 129

faster computer, lights that dim, more controls and instructions to all users so people quit turning it off on the projector, which seems to make it come on and off several times. When I come into the room and use my control, the projector won’t come on or the fan turns on, but no light.

Alamosa computer labs

Need to be arranged to be more conducive to an instructional environment that works for MY teaching style and the students’ learning styles.

Alamosa room 218

needs to be arranged in a way that is more conducive to learning

Faster computers in all the lecture classrooms would be great.

Alamosa 149

Adjustable lighting, pull down screen for projection, additional rooms on tables for students to work with books, paper, and computers.

All Polycom rooms need lights that dim, as in room 124 on the Alamosa campus.

All

Projector that students can hook up their laptop to for power point presentations

Berg 304

More blackboard or whiteboard space is needed.  Currently we have a whiteboard.  We need supplies in the room such as whiteboard markers and more erasers.

library classrooms

Sound proofing is essential as is an effective way to control ambient light from windows and room temperature.  Sight lines are a concern in some rooms.

Davis 133

Ability to control room lights from the lectern

Davis 203A

It is difficult for the students to see the board or screen because the room has a chemistry demonstration table (and it should since it was designed for science classes).  I am short and cannot write on the top of the board.  The room is very crowded for students.

The ability to turn off just part of the lights really helps

Berg 301

New shades so that the amount of sunlight in the room can be regulated.  The shades that are in there now are about 30 years old and are physically disintegrating.

Alamosa 243

This classroom has problems with the smart board.  The software and the screen are not working properly together.

Berg 310

Modify instructor “cabinet” so computer monitor does not block students’ view of the smart board (or replace with a lectern that houses computer), remove smart tv so it does not block white board space and student view, improve lighting control (ambient and overhead lights)

6.      Please add any other comments regarding technology in our classrooms that will be helpful to the Technology Committee.

We have been hampered in our use of technology due to lack of up to date equipment, dismally slow computer and the inertia of the system (system, not people).  Also the tech support people seem to be overburdened. This has a negative effect on the classroom.

I use my own VHS to watch training tapes.

I have a smart board in Davis 234 but it is off a little. It is frustrating because I can only use it from the computer.  For example, if I bring up the keyboard and try to type the letter f, I get r or t instead.

Annual review of technology needs with input from faculty.

Review assessment reports for additional information to connect student success and retention with the technology requirements and budget.

I believe that as tight as money is that classrooms should be customized to the instruction that is going on.

While technology is an excellent supplement to classroom activity, I think we must always remember that it does not effectively replace the huge impact of instructor/student interaction on learning, motivation, and retention.  Students who want to interact only electronically can stay home and save money.  If we dedicate a disproportionate amount of our budget to electronics and neglect other needs--such as hiring and retaining competent faculty, we will eventually eliminate our institution.

We only have fluorescent light.  Our own revenue (Trinidad campus – massage therapy) has paid for several standing lamps but we could definitely use some more.

Some people commented that chalk boards were out of date but I write more neatly with chalk than I do with markers.  Since I teach math courses I am contantly writing on the board, working out problems and graphing.  I don't think that these types of lessons can be properly taught with a power point presentation.  I use power point slides in my science classes and find them very useful although I need to write on the board occasionally and the lighting is not as good as it should be.

This is not hardware, but we need to build up our digital resources so that we have content to go along with the delivery equipment.  We have almost no DVDs in the Arts and Humanities.  We need a library of digital resources. We also need a digital fine art library for us in Art History, Art Appreciation and Humanities classes.  I would also use such resources in studio art classes.
