42 e-mail addresses were generated from SIS for all 2005-2006 TSJC graduates with an AA or AS degree (5 AS, 44 AA but only 37 addresses for AA graduates). Of these, eight (8) valid responses were received, all from 2006 graduates (3 from AS, 5 from AA students).Regarding transfer questions:
One graduate transferred out of state, but said that all courses transferred. The other seven all transferred to an in-state college (one each to Mesa State, CU-Denver, CU-Boulder, and 1 to Metropolitan State; the remaining three to CSU-Pueblo). Four of these said that all of their courses transferred, two said most transferred, and one said "No, they don't accept them here," but later explained that they don't offer those courses at the receiving college. Another graduate pointed out that the music course numbers did not match, so the TSJC courses all went towards elective hours.Regarding transfer preparedness
When asked if they felt that TSJC had prepared them for transfer, all but one answered "Yes." This graduate said"The majority of my classes at TSJC were very passive in providing students a University level education. I believe that the education there catered to students who were not going to transfer to a University after they graduated. Coming to ------- this past Fall, I personally had a reality check in that I never really studied at TSJC and all of a sudden, studying was essential to getting good grades up here. At TSJC, I hardly studied, the teachers gave easy tests and exams, and they rarely brought in real world material into their classes. I definitely believe that TSJC did not adequately prepare me for the rigor of a University."The other comments were"Yes, really helped out a lot thank you all"and"Harriet and Fred (Vaugeios) were really good and professional when it came to theatre classes. They trained me well and now my first semester at ----- I got casted for two plays out of hundreds that audition only a few get in."andYes, overall my work at TSJC prepared me well.Extra comments included
I think that TSJC certainly prepared me for this school. It was nice to go from one small school to another and it made it easier for me to adjust to dorm life and class life. Thanks for everything. The course work at TSJC not only prepared me, but I feel at times was more challenging then the course work at the major university I am attending. The math and science depts. are grueling but a necessary evil on the road to success, and I credit my achievements to the professors who saw me through till the end.I absolutely loved my time at TSJC. I loved that the classes were small and that you were able to get to know your professorsI would like to take the time to thank you all hard working faculty and staff at TSJC. You all don't even know how much difference you made in my life and I am sure other students as well. I feel that TSJC was a great starting point for me to better prepare me for what lies ahead of me, I respect you all for your hard work and all that you have done for me and I miss you all, and thank you once again.
Several faculty have pointed out that because this sample is so small (5 AA students returned survey in 2007), this assessment seems very weak. We should measure the number of students who transfer to 4-year schools within Colorado and those that transfer out-of-state and those that do not continue in higher education.
Using email has at least two serious problems.
As a result of this meta-assessment, AA/AS faculty have decided to try using SURDS or the National Student Clearinghouse to get more complete and objective data. We may also continue to poll students using e-mail and possibly telephone as well.
