Course TitleAlgebra Based Physics II with Lab

Course Number:       Physics 112 (5 credit hours)

Schedule:        MTWR 8:00-9:15 a.m.

Catalog Description:

Expands upon PHY 111 and covers sound waves, electric fields, electric circuits, magnetic fields, optics, and modern physics. Explores the concepts and theories presented in class through demonstrations and hands-on experiments.

Prerequisites: C or better in PHY 111

Policies and Attendance

Attendance is expected. Homework may be collected at the beginning of the class period; absentees may not submit homework late except for bona fide emergencies. Schedule your medical (and other) appointments outside of all of your class hours. No tobacco products are allowed in the physics lab.

Quizzes and exams must be taken at the scheduled times; missed quizzes and exams cannot be made up. Unannounced quizzes will be given.  It is your responsibility to work out absences with me ahead of time (this includes all TSJC-sponsored activities).

State the concepts introduced.

Distinguish between different concepts within a topic.

Translate descriptive material to mathematical formulae.

Translate mathematical formulae into charts, tables, or graphs.

Interpret graphs or tables.

Collect and organize data in a systematic manner.

Present data by construction of charts and graphs.

Evaluate the relevancy of data.

Write a formal report.

Set up and solve problems using geometry, algebra, and trigonometry as required.

Demonstrate prescribed problem solving methods.

Read, analyze and apply concepts to new situations.

Demonstrate the ability to select and apply contemporary forms of technology to solve problems or compile information.

Census Date:

February 1 - Census date is the last date to drop a class without penalty.

Last Date to withdraw:

April 16 - This is the last day that a "W" can be assigned as a grade.

 

Integration of Critical Skills:   Students will develop and demonstrate proficiency in reading technical material, computing (Excel spreadsheets and Internet research), and problem solving, especially quantitative problems.
