Chief John Jackson to speak at commencement

Chief John Jackson will be the honored guest speaker at the Trinidad State Junior College commencement exercises in Alamosa on Friday, May 13.
Chief Jackson was born and raised in Northeastern Iowa. The majority of his education was completed in this vicinity. He earned an Associates of Applied Arts degree in Police Science from the Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, Iowa, and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He then attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he earned an advanced Master’s degree in Administration of Criminal Justice.

Chief Jackson has attended many advanced training programs with an emphasis on leadership, organizational management and community policing based problem solving strategies. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, the Northwestern program on Advanced Supervision, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Advanced Supervision class, and Situational Leadership for Law Enforcement. Most recently he graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy’s Session #236.
Chief Jackson began his law enforcement career as a Reserve Police Officer with the Waterloo Iowa Police Department. He worked in this capacity as he completed his undergraduate studies. During this time, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve as a Military Police Officer. In 1988, Chief Jackson joined the Overland Park, Kansas Police Department. As a police officer with the Overland Park Police Department, Chief Jackson served in officer collateral duties such as tactical team, dive team, field training officer, crime scene investigator, and case investigator. Through his nearly 20 years of service, Chief Jackson was promoted through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant of Community Policing and retired as a Captain/Commander of the Investigation/Intelligence and Analysis Division. During his command tenures, he led the department through critical transitions to community policing and then on to intelligence led community policing.
In 2007, Chief Jackson accepted the Chief of Police position with the Alamosa Colorado Police Department. During his tenure with the Alamosa Police Department, he led the department through fundamental changes to move the agency forward with technology, the design of new facilities, a handling of a major ecological disaster, and implemented a community and intelligence led policing philosophy. In 2011, Chief Jackson accepted the Chief of Police position with the Greenwood Village Colorado Police Department. He is currently responsible for the overall operation of the entire police department with 66 sworn officers and 28 civilian support staff. Greenwood Village, Colorado, is a special place with an overall focus on making a difference through driven community partnerships, service and safety.
The TSJC graduation will be held in the gym at Ortega Middle School on Friday, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.
