A summer to remember
with the TSJC Math Science Upward Bound Program
The Trinidad State Junior College Math Science Upward Bound TRiO Program (MSUB) celebrated its 20th summer under the directorship of Judy MacLaren. Fifty students from Colorado and New Mexico attended the six-week residential program on the Trinidad campus of TSJC.
The rigorous curriculum included courses in geology, mathematics, Navajo, financial planning, critical thinking, composition/literature, Celtic and Cuban music and dance, multimedia, and college prep.
With the aid of a partnership grant with the University of Colorado at Boulder Science Discovery Center, eight MSUB students attended an electromagnetism course and another course on permaculture at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
All students attended a hands-on learning workshop at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center where they learned and practiced suturing techniques and visited the School of Dental Medicine. Students also toured the Morrison Museum of Natural History and The Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison.
MSUB students also attended an interactive presentation and workshop on protecting and living amid wildlife, presented by Colorado Division of Wildlife Officer, Bob Holder.
Each of the fifty MSUB students gave over 10 hours in community service. MSUB students mentored young participants with building and launching rockets in the TSJC College for Kids Rocket class. Other community service projects included beautifying projects by picking up trash and debris at Trinidad Lake, North Lake, and on the TSJC campus.
