Gunsmithing School Admission Requirements

For Fall Enrollment

*Thank you for your interest in Trinidad State Junior College. The Fall semester application deadlines for Gunsmithing are closed. The deadline for the spring applications for the coming year will be the last Friday in September and the deadline for the fall applications will be the last Friday in February. Late applications will not be accepted. *

Acceptance into the Gunsmithing School is determined on a point system criterion. If there are more applicants than space available, the applicants with the highest scores will be admitted first. If a space becomes available due to a student declining admission, the applicant with the next highest score will be contacted. Unsuccesful applicants will be notified and can reapply the next semester. Students who have been accepted but decline admissions must reapply if they would like to attend at a later date.

Students seeking admission into the Gunsmithing School must complete the following requirements. All required documents should be mailed (unless otherwise noted) to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department at:

Steps 1-3 - Deadline: January 31, 2014

1 - Apply for admission to Trinidad State Junior College
Apply online at www.trinidadstate.edu/students/admissions/apply

2 - Submit Driver’s License, official high school transcript, Accuplacer test scores, immunization records and Birth Certificate - Mail to CTE Department using the address above

3 - Application to Program
Students who have met the testing requirements and have been accepted to Trinidad State Junior College will receive an application for admission to the Gunsmithing program. Steps 4-6 - Deadline: the last Friday of September for spring application and the last Friday of February for fall applications.

4. Submit application for admission into the Gunsmithing School

5. Submit an Essay to the Gunsmithing School
Your essay should be a maximum of 1,000 words, double-spaced and typed in Times New Roman font, size 12. Your essay should include the items listed in the Gunsmithing School application. Mail the essay along with your completed Gunsmithing School application to the CTE Department. An email will be sent to you to confirm receipt of the full application packet.

6. Submit three letters of recommendation
The recommendation letters should be from employers, teachers, or other professionals who are not related to the applicant and have a personal knowledge of the applicant’s work ethic, and personal background. All recommendation letters must be mailed directly from the recommender to:

Based on the review of the applications, letters of application and letters of recommendation, a select number of prospective students will be notified via e-mail and letter to schedule an interview.

Steps 7 - Deadline: the second Friday in March for fall interviews; the second Friday in October for spring interviews.

7. Participate in an interview
The interview will be conducted via SKYPE or WebEX (video conference). The interview committee consists of two Gunsmithing faculty members and the Dean of CTE. The interview process determines the students who will be admitted to the program. Students accepted for admission to the Gunsmithing program will be notified by the last Friday in March for fall interviews; the last Friday in October for spring interviews.

Notes:

  • Random drug testing of Gunsmithing students may be required as permitted by college policy.
  • Colorado law forbids any person under the age of 18 to possess a handgun. Students must be 18 years or older before the Gunsmithing courses they are enrolled in begin.

Steps 8-10 (ACCEPTED STUDENTS ONLY)

8. Complete a background check
Students must prove their eligibility to own and possess firearms, including all project guns, receivers, etc. required for courses in the Trinidad State Gunsmithing program. Only those students who are selected for admissions to Gunsmithing will be sent a link by email to complete a background check. The cost of the background check is $35. Please Note: Enrolled students with felony and/or misdemeanor charges found on a Colorado Bureau of Investigation check for a firearms transaction could be dismissed from the program and would be responsible for any tuition charges beyond the census date.

9. Submit a deposit of $250
Students accepted to the Gunsmithing School must submit a $250 deposit on tuition to claim a spot in the program. Please provide your Trinidad State Student ID number when making the payment. Call (719) 846-5547 to pay via credit card or send a check, payable to Trinidad State Junior College, to:

10. Complete and submit the following forms:

  • Registration form
  • CTE Emergency form
  • Waiver of Liability form
  • FERPA form
  • Housing Reservation form
  • WICHE/WUE application

The forms will be sent in a packet, along with an acceptance letter, to admitted students. Registration for classes must be done by phone or in person through the CTE Advisor. Online registration is not permitted. The CTE Advisor will advise admitted students on other requirements to complete the enrollment process for the Gunsmithing program.
