Assessment
Information Quick Run-down
Why do we do
assessment?
*Assessment is done to ensure that
student learning is occurring and excellence in teaching is happening. When we do assessment we are measuring
several things:
*How well students can read, comprehend,
apply what they have learned, perform the skills necessary for their
certificate/degree, graduate and get a job (in a nut-shell).
So how do we do
assessment?
*There are many ways that we can do
assessment. There is an outline of 5
Student Learning Outcomes and Goals that have been designated as a guide for
each faculty to assess their student learning.
Here they are:
1.
Read
and Comprehend College-Level Coursework
2.
Explain
and Defend Ideas Orally and In Writing
3.
Examine
Ideas Using Critical Reasoning
4.
Solve
Problems Using Logic, Mathematics, Computers and Creative Thinking
5.
Demonstrate
Responsible Citizenship
*Once
you have decided what you would like to assess, you choose how you are going to
do that. You can give a chapter test,
embedded essay questions, project, portfolio, skills
based exam, etc… etc… etc… You are all
doing some kind of assessment with your students to ensure that they are
learning the material necessary in your courses. You get to choose one or two of those pieces
to use for your assessment.
*Once
you have decided what goals you are going to use and what assessment you are
going to do, you grade the assessment in terms of a 1, 2, or 3.
1 – Unsatisfactory
2 – Satisfactory
3 – Exemplary
We can think of these in terms of 1 –
D or F, 2 – B or C, 3 – A
What do we do with this
information after we are done?
*Two different pieces of information needed –
*First
from
ALL faculty we will follow an Excel spreadsheet
template and they will enter in the S# and score for each student that
completed the assessment.
*Follow spreadsheet template that we have provided
you – This is the easiest for Bob because he has to cut and paste and put
together all of the information that we send him.
*You will find
the template if you go to trinidadstate.edu - Academics – Faculty – Assessment
- Course-specific, Embedded GEO
Assessment Instruments – this scoring template.
*After you have
filled in your spreadsheet, you will send it to Bob Philbin. With your spreadsheet you will send a quick
rundown of the kind of assessment that you did and how you graded the students.
*For example: GenEd Goal 1. Read and
comprehend college-level work
Task assigned:
Students read chapter on Roles of a Teacher and then answered questions about
those responsibilities.
Questions
included:
1) List the 4
major categories of responsibility for a classroom teacher;
2) Identify
qualities they possess of a teacher from a quality child care center;
3) Conclude
accurate data from a graph of number of child care centers who exemplify
quality.
*Second – Trac-dat
information from department heads, division chairs, directors, or a designated
person: Tracdat entries regarding
information on courses and programs.
*Trac-dat information should at a minimum be
outlined to measure the following three areas:
*Program
Level - Completers of each program – Graduation/Completion Rate
*Course
Level – Students can perform the skills necessary for their program (GenEd
level assessment from the above 5 student learning outcomes-goals)
*VE-135 –
Information on graduates entering the job force – employment
*Again a how to guide has been written
for you in order to help you enter your information into Trac-dat
