| Analysis of the Math Lab Survey for the Spring Semester of 2006 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Analysis of the spring 2006 Math Lab survey results shows improvements from the previous semester in the scores of nearly all categories surveyed. Marked improvements were shown in the categories of noise level during class, response time to flags, and individualized attention given to students, while modest improvements were made in each of the remaining categories. I feel that the large improvements made in the fore-mentioned categories can be attributed to the smaller class sizes typically seen in the spring semester. With the smaller student-to-teacher ratios, students can spend more time working with their instructors, and they can get their questions answered in a more timely fashion. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Another improvement worth mentioning is the fact that larger percentages of students either remained on schedule or worked ahead of schedule compared to last fall. The students’ analysis of their own progress seems to indicate that a majority (80%) of the students were able to complete the material and comprehend it in a timely fashion. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The only discouraging response was the very low amount of students that are taking advantage of the free tutoring offered in the Learning Center. A slightly larger amount of students are attending open lab for tutoring than in previous semesters, but far too few students are utilizing the one-on-one assistance they could be receiving through tutoring. Next semester, tutoring will be stressed throughout the semester to students who appear to be struggling. A few students mentioned in their comments that they signed up for tutoring, but a particular tutor failed to come to their scheduled sessions. This is a concern that will addressed with the tutoring supervisor. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Perhaps the highlight of the entire survey was that none of the 75 students surveyed felt that they had a negative experience as a student in the Math Lab. Moreover, 97% of those students felt that their Math Lab experience could be deemed positive. This is very gratifying, as the entire Math Lab staff strives to make each student’s learning experience as positive and pleasant as possible. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Nothing – I think it’s great/you do a great job | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · A lecture for Math 106 and above would be helpful for students | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · It’s just fine the way it is | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · We should be able to take a test whenever we want | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have more teachers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have tutors who care and will spend time with you because people who care have patience | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · When we put our flags up, it would be good if they could come quicker unless they are with other students | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have class 3 days a week | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have more open lab hours/more open lab hours at night | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have at least one more teacher to help students out; sometimes teachers get busy trying to help everyone | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Allow two days for harder and longer sets | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · It was hard to attend open labs due to the times they were scheduled | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Just keep up the excellent work | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Don’t have 3 classes going on at the same time in one room | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · I didn’t like the flag idea | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · I hated how the class felt like an elementary math class because we are in college | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Stay open every day | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · More one-on-one help | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · A lot of the time students have the same problems, so it would be good if the instructor could go over problem areas with the students who need help, and the students who don’t have problems don’t have to listen but can work on their own | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Allow students to use personal entertainment devices (i.e. MP3 players) during class at an acceptable volume to help some students focus | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have traditional lectures | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Need an air vent | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · The noise is the only thing I would improve upon, but I think this is something that would be hard to fix | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · More chances for extra credit | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have in-class testing on Fridays also | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Allow music - it helps me work more efficiently | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Keep the good teachers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| · Have open lab time that is early in the weekend | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| WHAT PUT YOU BEHIND SCHEDULE | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
