College 101

What is College 101?

Trinidad State Junior College recognizes the need to assist high school counselors in preparing juniors and seniors for the college experience.  TSJC recently invited Las Animas, Huerfano, Union, and Colfax County High School Juniors and Seniors to their 1st Annual College 101 Seminar.  The juniors participated on Tuesday, 3/14/06, and the seniors on Wednesday, 3/15/06. Four sessions were offered to share information and resources with students from our service area.Sessions Include:
Finding Money — Workshop assisted students in: securing their PIN (Personal Identification Number) for FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid), explained FAFSA and what forms/information needed to be gathered from student and parents;  scholarship searches; necessary paperwork for student loans, work-study opportunities, and internship opportunities.         
Did you Know?  Workshop explained the difference between the AA, AAS, AS, AGS degrees (accredited/non-accredited institutions); registered students for College Opportunity Fund Scholarship; assisted students searching for career opportunities through the Occupational Outlook Handbook; and other questions about college and career opportunities were addressed.
How Are You Smart?—Students multiple intelligences were identified and each student received individualized information on their strengths/weaknesses and career matches were discussed.
Job Fair—Shirley Donachy, SouthCentral Workforce, Trinidad office and Mary Anderson from the Rocky Mt. SER offices assisted area students in filling out job applications, interviewing skills, and job seeking skills.One hundred and two high school juniors attended Tuesday’s session and eighty-six high school seniors attended Wednesday’s session.  Schools participating in the event were Aguilar, Holy Trinity Academy, Primero, and Trinidad.Any juniors and seniors that may have missed this great opportunity, please contact Dr. Sandra Veltri, Dean of Student Services and interim Dean of Career and Technical Education, at 719-846-5559.  Remember -- TSJC is a great place to start!
