THIS IS TRINIDAD STATE JUNIOR COLLEGE

Trinidad State Junior College is the oldest two-year college in Colorado with 85 years of quality education and service. TSJC offers you a high-quality educational experience both on and off campus.

Fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, TSJC offers instruction in liberal arts transfer programs and vocational-technical areas. These programs lead to the degrees of Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of General Studies, Associate of Applied Science and various certificates.

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

The TSJC Occupational Safety and Health Curriculum was developed in 1988 and gained Colorado Commission on Higher Education approval in 1989. This curriculum meets the guidelines developed jointly by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). These guidelines define academic requirements for safety degrees and other routes of academic preparation for the profession.

The guidelines also reflect the tasks and functions performed by safety practitioners as defined by ASSE. In developing the curriculum guidelines, ASSE/BCSP relied on National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored studies to determine what subjects were most important for safety practitioners. The ASSE/BCSP also contacted TSJC and several other junior colleges and community colleges that have safety associate degree programs for their input on curriculum requirements.

In 1996 the Occupational Safety and Health program won a Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) Program of Excellence Award.  This makes the TSJC Occupational Safety program one of less than 2% of the higher education degree programs in Colorado to receive this award. Through the award, the Commission granted TSJC $223,500 to develop the Occupational Safety program for distance education delivery.

In 2000, the Occupational Safety and Health Technology program received accreditation by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone (410) 347-7700.

OSHT CURRICULUM

The mission of the Occupational Safety and Health Technology (OSHT) Program is to provide a high-quality occupational safety educational experience to both pre-service students and in-service safety and health professionals to ensure these individuals can function effectively at the safety technician level upon completion of this course of study. OSHT courses may be completed via Internet delivery through the Colorado Community Colleges Online consortium (see below). The flexibility of online courses allows students to continue their education while meeting employment, community and family responsibilities.

The program objectives are that within the two-year period after graduation, graduates will be able to:

  • anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace and formulate hazard control designs, methods, procedures, and programs;
  • solve safety-related problems using mathematics, chemistry and life sciences, or management techniques; and
  • use the techniques, skills, and modern scientific and technical tools necessary for professional practice.

Associate of Applied Science Degree

The program educational outcomes of the TSJC Occupational Safety and Health Technology Program provide a basic understanding and application of occupational safety and health practice and equip the student, by the time of graduation, to:

  • apply a working knowledge of mathematics and the sciences to conduct experiments and to analyze and interpret data to solve safety and health related issues;
  • identify, formulate, and solve applied science problems, using the techniques, skills, and modern tools necessary for professional practice;
  • apply the principles of industrial hygiene and toxicology, and use fundamental exposure measurement techniques and instruments;
  • perform basic occupational safety and health functions;
  • exhibit teamwork;
  • demonstrate effective communication skills; and
  • exhibit the importance of lifelong learning as it relates to contemporary issues and professional and ethical responsibilities in the practice of occupational safety and health.

CERTIFICATE, OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH - REQUIREMENTS

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY INTERNSHIP

The Occupational Safety Internship, OSH 281, provides the occupational safety and health student an opportunity to earn up to 12 credit hours through job experiences.  This is not credit for prior learning (see below) or credit for work currently being performed.

Well-defined learning objectives must be established between the student, their employer/supervisor, and the OSHT Program Coordinator to provide a new learning experience that is directly related to one of the required or elective OSH courses.  Credits earned through the Occupational Safety Internship may then be substituted for course requirements and are applied directly toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree or Certificate in the OSHT Program.  Students are awarded 1 credit hour for every 45 hours of work experience directly related to the learning objectives for the internship.

For further information or to register for an internship, contact the OSHT Program Coordinator, Jocelyn Cessar, at osh@trinidadstate.edu or at 1-888-736-2883.  PLEASE NOTE:  Students should have completed 30 credit hours of OSH courses before registering for an Internship. Approval in writing by the OSHT Program Coordinator is required prior to enrolling in the Internship.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING (Life Experience)

Credit may be issued for life experience in safety-related work areas as provided for in the Credit for Prior Learning Policy established by the Colorado State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education (SBCCOE Policy BP 9-42). The student must provide a portfolio documenting prior learning of the course content material for each OSH course for which they are seeking Credit for Prior Learning.

Please see
Details on credit for life experience and guidelines for developing a portfolio. Read this page carefully, as it will answer most of your questions about how Credit for Prior Learning works and how to develop a portfolio. Before contacting the OSHT program with questions about Credit for Prior Learning, check to ensure they haven't already been answered on this page.

CSP® ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

Effective January 1998, all new applicants for the Certified Safety Professional® (CSP® ) designation must have either an Associate's degree in safety/health or a Bachelor's degree in any field to meet the educational requirement for the CSP® certification process. The TSJC Associate of Applied Science Degree with a major in Occupational Safety and Health Technology meets this educational requirement. The TSJC AAS degree in OHST plus 2 1/2 years of acceptable professional safety experience will give the candidate the necessary 48 points to sit for the Safety Fundamentals examination. Upon passing this exam, candidates will receive the Associate Safety Professional® (ASP® ) designation, the first step toward CSP® certification. For further information on the CSP® certification, contact the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, 208 Burwash Avenue, Savoy, IL 61874, phone (217) 359-9263 or visit their web site: http://www.bcsp.org.

Note: The requisite degree coupled with the necessary experience meets the criteria to sit for the ASP/CSP exams. The curriculum for the AAS degree in OSHT does not encompass all topics covered on the ASP/CSP exams, and TSJC does not guarantee students will pass either exam. It is highly recommended that students attend an ASP/CSP preparatory workshop prior to sitting for the exam. Sample exams and worksheets may be obtained via the BCSP web site.

COLORADO COMMUNITY COLLEGES ONLINE

CCCOnline (http://www.ccconline.org) is a single location web site where students can earn Certificate and Associate Degrees from any of the CCCOnline Partner Colleges, including TSJC. Students may choose online at which college they wish to be registered and will be assured of the quality which the partner colleges have delivered since the early 1900s. CCCOnline is an initiative of the Colorado Community Colleges and Occupational Education System (CCCOES). Established in 1986, CCCOES is the largest system of higher education in Colorado. Comprising 14 state system community colleges and overseeing district community colleges, area vocational schools, and career and technical education programs in 150 school districts, CCCOES serves more than 217,000 students annually.

CCCOnline offers courses that apply toward the Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Safety and Health Technology (OSH), as well as many other disciplines. Courses offered are fully accredited, recognized by all of the partner colleges, and are transferable between the colleges. Courses taken through CCCOnline will be transcripted at the college of your choice from among the partner colleges (your "home" college). Students can take courses "anytime-anywhere" at their convenience. CCCOnline enhances services to students, offering regular communication with faculty and fellow students who may be anywhere in the world. At the same time, students learn to use the Internet, threaded discussions, chat rooms, and wikis to enhance their learning experience.

Courses completed online receive the same academic recognition as those completed on campus. Therefore the online course must meet the same academic standards and expectations as if completed on campus. Online learning requires a significant commitment and considerable self-discipline to be successful. Positive results can best be realized by allocating the time necessary to complete course work on a regular daily schedule as if you were on campus.

TRANSCRIPT EVALUATION AND COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS

Immediately after submitting a TSJC application, the student should request official transcripts be submitted to TSJC by other institutions of higher learning where college credit has been obtained. Only official transcripts - no copies - will be used by TSJC faculty and administration in evaluation of prior education as it may relate to satisfying current TSJC Occupational Safety requirements. These transcripts should be sent to:

Trinidad State Junior College
600 Prospect Street
Trinidad, CO 81082
Attn: Gloria Coke, Registrar

Once official transcripts have been evaluated, credit will be issued for courses completed at other institutions that meet the general education and/or occupational safety requirements of the OSHT Program.

Transfer Credit Policies: Please note that all transfer credits must have been completed at a regionally accredited institution of higher learning within the 10 years prior to TSJC's receipt of the official transcript, and only courses directly applicable to the OSH degree or certificate requirements will be applied to those requirements (for example, credits for History or Art classes, in addition to any others not specifically listed on the OSHT certificate or degree requirements, will not apply). Additionally, portfolio credits from other institutions will NOT be accepted as transfer credits; however, students may submit portfolios to TSJC for approval per the Credit for Prior Learning guidelines (see Credit for Prior Learning section above).

Course Substitutions: To ensure consistency of completion of the required course work for the degree, the only course substitutions that will be accepted are transfer courses determined to be higher level than the required courses as published. For example, CHE 101 Intro to Chemistry I is required; a transfer course equating to CHE 111 General College Chemistry I would be an acceptable substitution. Likewise, MAT 121 College Algebra is required; MAT 122 College Trigonometry would be an acceptable substitution, as MAT 121 is a pre-requisite for MAT 122 at TSJC. No other course substitutions will be accepted.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION OPPORTUNITY

Many vocational rehabilitation clients have developed a genuine interest in occupational safety and health as a result of a devastating disabling injury. Trinidad State Junior College's Occupational Safety and Health Associate Degree program has proven very successful for injured workers in vocational rehabilitation programs.

Through the years, the OSHT program has graduated injured workers from several different states, all of whom have returned to work as safety technicians in industries where they had previous work experience. The worker’s pre-injury job knowledge was 100% transferable and directly related to his Occupational Safety education and employment as a safety professional. We believe this makes the Trinidad State Occupational Safety program a very valuable resource in vocational rehabilitation efforts.

Please call or e-mail us if we can be of further assistance in regard to this educational opportunity for the individual seeking a rewarding career through vocational rehabilitation.
