The Trinidad State golf team got their 2008 spring season underway this past weekend in Lakewood at the Colorado School of Mines Spring Invitational.
The Trojans and the Otero Rattlers were the only two-year schools in the tournament which got underway on Sunday at the Bear Creek Golf Course. After day one Trojan Brad Hernandez was in the running just four strokes behind the leaders.
The second day the tournament moved to Fox Hollow Golf Club, also in Lakewood. The Trojans shot better as a team but couldn’t make up any ground on the four-year schools. Trinidad ended up in seventh ahead of only the Rattlers.
Hernandez finished 19th overall and was the leading TSJC golfer with a 160. Eric Weghorst shot a 77 on day two to pull into 28th with a 167.
The University of Northern Colorado won the team championship. They began the second day of competition in third place, recorded a team score of 283 on Monday en route to a three-stroke victory over Montana State University.
UNC’s Stephen Bidne topped the individual leader board with his two-day total of 145. Bidne, who was tied for eighth place after round one, registered a seven-under-par 64 to come away with a one-stroke victory.
The Trojans will head to McCook, Nebraska later this week for McCook Invitational Tournament.
