Diehl sets single records in weekend games
Freshman Julia Diehl set four single season records this past weekend for the Lady Trojans in their games against Pratt Community College of Kansas. The Lady Trojans won the first game of the series 4-2 before dropping the remaining three by the scores of 10-2, 15-7 and 5-1. This brings the Trojans record to an all time best 29-20 to wrap-up the regular season.
"I knew going in that we had to play our best softball all four games to get some wins this weekend," TSJC coach Steve Swazo said. "Pratt is a very good team and they hit the ball very well. We struggled at the plate bringing in some runs when we had runners in scoring position. We also gave up some big innings and they capitalized on that."
Diehl had eight hits in the four-game series surpassing former stand-out player Stacy Stokes. Diehl now has 68 hits on the season. Diehl now holds the single season record for at bats (154), runs scored (46), and is also tied with teammate Anneliese Lange for most RBI's in a season with 44. Diehl is leading the team with a .441 batting average.
"I knew Julia was close to the record before we went into the Pratt series and was glad that she got the record," Swazo said. "She really hit the ball well this weekend."
In the first game, it was Diehl picking up the victory in a game that went eight innings for the 4-2 win. Trinidad scored two runs in the top half of the eighth inning as Yadira Jacquez and Tanisha Bradford provided the winning RBI's.
The next three games, the bats went silent and the Trinidad pitchers struggled holding a lead. Pratt took advantage taking the next three games.
"We made contact all weekend, but hit the ball right at them and they made the plays," Swazo said. "It was a long road trip. I was very proud of my girls on how they competed in the four-game series and didn't quit the whole time they played. Now we just have to have two good weeks of practice to get ready for the regional tournament. Now you throw out the season records and go win five games. We do that and we qualify for the national tournament and that is what we have worked for all season."
Trinidad State (29-20 overall and 13-11 in Region 9 play) will now take the number third seed into the Region IX tournament beginning May 1-4. Those games are tentatively scheduled to be played in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
