Will Supplemental Instruction Work?  

SI is not perceived as a remedial program. It targets difficult courses, not struggling students.

SI works best if:

• the course title has them shaking in their boots!
• the withdrawal rate or failure rate is 30% or higher
• the course has a large volume of content to be processed or text to read
• the instructor (because of large content volume) hasn't time for:

1. Hands-on activity
2. group processing of material
3. pre-exam and post-exam review
4. feedback on problem solving

• the students notes and focus are missing the mark
• the student's writing skills are not up to par If it ain't rough, they won't come!
