Advising Services
Advising
Trinidad State Junior College provides qualified advisors to assist students with planning programs in vocational and academic studies. Any student desiring assistance should contact advisors in the Student Advising located on the second floor of the Berg Administration Building, Room 209.
Each student is assigned an advisor. The advisor will assist the student with program planning and articulate the requirements and opportunities within their chosen vocations. Both full and part-time students are expected to consult with an advisor on all matters of curriculum and program choice.
Student Advising staff will assist students to identify interests and aptitudes. Various tests, including the Accuplacer, and the Career Scope Program, provide an indication of a student's aptitude, interests, and level of achievement in basic skills. The significance of the tests in terms of educational, vocational, and academic planning is discussed on an individual basis with students.
Trinidad State Junior College staff maintains a genuine interest in the welfare of its students. The college provides the opportunity for students to explore their interests, to arrive at worthwhile career objectives, and to establish the means for accomplishing those objectives. TSJC is not a large institution, therefore it is possible for faculty members to get to know students as individuals and support them in their activities and achievements. This friendly interest on the part of the faculty helps students adjust to college life and prepare for the real world.
Advising is a developmental process that assists students in the clarification of their life/career goals and the development of educational plans for the realization of these goals.
The advisor's role and responsibilities include the following:
- Helping students to define and develop realistic educational and career goals.
- Assisting students in the registration process and planning programs consistent with their abilities and interests.
- Assisting students in monitoring and evaluating their educational progress.
- Using an "Early Alert System" to identify students experiencing academic problems.
