How to Turn On Captions and Auto-Translate on YouTube Videos
To Turn On Captions (CC):
-
Open the YouTube video you want to watch.
-
Click the “CC” button in the bottom-right corner of the video player.
-
This turns on English captions (if available).
-
If there's no CC button, the video may not have captions uploaded.
-
To Turn On Auto-Translate:
-
While the video is playing, click the gear icon (Settings) in the bottom-right corner of the video player.
-
From the menu that pops up, select “Subtitles/CC.”
-
If subtitles are available, choose “Auto-translate.”
-
A list of languages will appear — select your preferred language.
-
Captions will now appear in your chosen language, automatically translated.
On Mobile (YouTube App):
-
Tap the video to bring up the controls.
-
Tap the three vertical dots (top-right corner).
-
Tap “Captions” to turn them on.
-
To translate, go to your device’s settings, change the language, and YouTube may auto-translate based on that — however, full auto-translate options are better supported on desktop.
