From 37 Students to a Regional College
Trinidad State began by sharing space and faculty with Trinidad High School. Today, with campuses in Trinidad and Alamosa, we provide an affordable and accessible education to students in southern Colorado and beyond.

Our History
A Century of Milestones
A few highlights from Trinidad State’s first hundred years. Read the full history of Trinidad State.
- 1925
Colorado’s First Community College
Trinidad State opens in April with 37 students. The founding bill was sponsored by State Senator Sam Freudenthal, for whom the campus library is now named.
- 1933
First Graduates
With a full two years of classes offered by 1932, the first eight students earn two-year degrees in May 1933.
- 1935
A Campus of Its Own
Classes move to the newly remodeled Tillotson Academy building, just east of the present-day Berg Building.
- 1940
Building for the Future
Construction begins on what are now the Berg Administration Building (spring) and Scott Gymnasium (fall).
- 1947
Gunsmithing Begins
The gunsmithing program launches and grows into what is now regarded as the premier gunsmithing program in the United States.
- 1968
Joining the System
Trinidad State is accepted into the Colorado Community College System.
- 1994
The Valley Campus
Trinidad State merges with the San Luis Valley Educational Center in Alamosa, creating the Trinidad State Valley Campus.
- 2015
A National First
Trinidad State is selected as the first NRA Certified Training Center.
- 2025
100 Years
Trinidad State celebrates its centennial with alumni, friends, and the communities it serves.
