FAQ's

You will learn the skills required to perform duties as a law enforcement professional. The Colorado POST Board has established the curriculum and mandated training hours. Attendees are referred to as recruits and must complete all mandated hours before they are eligible to sit for the state certification exam. Moderate discipline is applied during academy sessions and field training exercises — preparation for the standards of a law enforcement agency.

Most training takes place at the San Luis Valley Law Enforcement Regional Training Center in Alamosa, Colorado. Skills training also takes place at various locations within Alamosa.

Completing the academy earns you a Certificate in Basic Law Enforcement (35 credit hours). You can then continue to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree by completing an additional 27 credits.

Earning this certificate makes you eligible to take the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) exam to become a police officer anywhere in Colorado. Graduates work in municipal police departments, county sheriffs' offices, state patrol, and other law enforcement agencies.

Spots are limited to 25 cadets per academy. Class starts in the fall (usually mid-August) and graduation is the following May. Apply early — spots fill quickly.

Cadets must pass a background check and have no felonies or violent misdemeanors on record. Drug screenings are also required. After the academy, you will take the Colorado POST exam to obtain state certification.
